　　Betaine benefits gut health

　　Effects of betaine on the digestibility of nutrients in the ileum or whole digestive tract of pigs. Repeated observations of increased ileal digestibility of fiber (crude fiber or neutral and acidic detergent fiber) suggest that betaine has stimulated bacterial fermentation in the small intestine because enterocytes do not produce fiber-degrading enzymes. The fibrous part of plants contains nutrients that can be released during microbial fiber degradation. As a result, the digestibility of dry matter and crude ash is also improved.

　　At the total gut level, piglets fed 800 mg betaine/kg diet improved crude protein (+6.4%) and dry matter (+4.2%) digestibility.

　　In addition, the apparent total digestibility of crude protein (+3.7%) and ether extract (+6.7%) was improved after the addition of 1250 mg/kg betaine.

　　One possible reason for the observed increase in nutrient digestibility is the effect of betaine on enzyme production. In a recent in vivo study on the effects of betaine supplementation in weaned piglets, the activities of digestive enzymes (amylase, maltase, lipase, trypsin and chymotrypsin) were assessed (Figure 1). The activities of all enzymes were increased except maltase, and the effect of betaine was more pronounced in the 2500 mg/kg diet than in the 1250 mg/kg diet. The increase in activity may be the result of an increase in enzyme production, or it may be a result of an increase in the catalytic efficiency of the enzyme.
